What exactly does the term “49er” mean?

I am not talking about the football team. I know that the 49ers were the people who came to California during the gold rush, but why are they called that?

   BBecause the california gold rush started in 1849.

   People who immigrated to California after gold was discovered. Most of them figured they could strike it rich too. Few did.
