I have already realized it, he has 19 TD's and 31 picks. No good QB has ever had such a ratio. He has looked good at times, but he looks like a bust right now.

Maybe Martz will help him, but I will give him one more year, a 1st round pick should be at full potential after 4 years.

Well the thing about Alex Smith is that "how long" is actually a part of the problem in calling him a bust yet. He came into the league after only 2 years of college; he was drafted when he was 19, if I'm not mistaken, or else he had just had his 20th birthday or something shortly before he was drafted (he was in an accelerated program and got his college degree in only 2 years, which is one thing that the 49ers liked about him, because he's pretty smart).

We all know quarterback is a position that takes time, and maturity, probably more than any other position in many ways. Most QBs wait until their senior year and they graduate before they go into the pros; then usually they'll sit out for a year, then be a starter, and then maybe by their 3rd season in the NFL we'll have been able to fully evaluate them and we can tell whether they're going to be good or bad. So thats 4 years of school, and maybe 3, maybe even 4 years of being in the pros, that's 7 or 8 years.

Smith's played 2 years of college, and only 3 years of pro ball. He's also younger than most NFL players; the year he got drafted, he potentially could have still been growing and getting taller, I mean the kid wasn't even fully grown yet. So I think being so young makes it hard to call him a bust just yet because he still hasn't played in the big leagues for all that long. He may still very well end up being considered a bust, I'm not denying that; I'm just saying that right now, he's still too young to assume that he's a bust right now, or will be a bust later.

Having 4 offensive coordinators in 4 years has stunted Smith's progression. A bust, is Ryan Leaf, that's a bust. Alex Smith has skills, it's the organization that keeps hindering his development. They have a defensive minded head coach who hasn't really helped Smith and an owner who couldn't give enough money to Norv Turner so he can stick around instead of stinking the Chargers up. The reason why I like Aaron Rodgers and I hope he does good, is because he is a Cal product. Last time I really rooted for a QB out of Cal, well let's just say the Ravens aren't too fond of him anymore.

I'm sure they've already realized it, they're just not ready to admit it yet... same goes for the franchise itself.

I didn't think he was that good coming out of college. He played at freakin' Utah in Urban Meyer's funny offense. At least Rodgers played in a pro style offense versus legit talent in the Pac-10.

Now, we've only seen a flash of Rodgers, so don't get high on him yet. But I've seen enough of Smith and I stand firm in saying he ain't jack.

Alex Smith is gonna be one of the biggest Bust ever for the #1 overall pick. He's not a great QB period, the 49ers know they make the mistake but they're trying to make it work, this will be his last shot this season to prove he's their franchise QB. But i don't think so, he's a BUST.

I'm not so sure that he is a total bust.. I mean.. He really hasn't had the best of opportunities so far.. But he must improve THIS year or San Fran will be getting a new quarterback.. :/

I believe this will be the last chance for Alex Smith to prove his worth. He will be in competition for the starting job. It is now or never.

The San Francisco 49ers have been a proud franchise with many great QB's, Y.A. Tittle, John Brodie, Joe Montana, Steve Young, etc...

In defense of Smith, he hasn't had a number 1 receiver to throw the ball to and he has had a new offensive coordinator almost every year. With that said, this is probably his last chance as a starter in the NFL this year.
