They have too much money committed to Smith in 2008. After the 2008 season, I believe the Niners will need to make a decision for or against Smith because his contract bonus kicks in. I say give him another season and see how it goes. Alex Smith will either turn into Drew Brees (needed a few seasons to become a top QB) or David Carr (hopeless). As for Shaun Hill, he'll definitely move up to backup QB after the Niners waive Dilfer.
