49er and knowledgable fans only-With the realization that will be recieving another top 10 pick maybe top 5?

49er
Seabiscuit asked:

What position should we be looking to improve or which player in college right now do you think will help us become a winning team? Do we need d-line help or a big time play making wide reciever? Is Alex Smith going to get better, or are we just don’t have good enough talent to help him improve?

When healthy the offense skill positions should be fine. Help on D and either lines would be the best.

i dont know enough college player names to name them but i think we need 2 things: a big time WR and better offensive linemen. We spent alot of money on the defense last offseason and that has paid off. the def. would be better if the offense was. now we need playmakers. i think alex smith can become a good QB but he has no receivers right now. Battle is probably the best WR they have. Jackson is a scrub as is Lelie. Vernon Davis the tight end is more reputation than reality and that reputation is built on his looks and his mouth rather than his play. he’s done nothing in his career so far. we have a good rb in gore but we need more playmakers and better protection. A better offensive coordinator would help too. Maybe we can get norv turner back when the chargers fire him after the season.

Well, as a Viking fan, I say we both would need either a tackle or a HUGE playmaking receiver, however, either one are incredibly hard to find, which is why our teams lack the offense they need to win. D-Line help is needed by your 49ers, so Glen Dorsey may be the key to your future.

Wow you are thinking on my wave lenght. I was just describing how the 49ers have bigger issues to address than worrying about drafting another QB. Let Alex Smith be for now. He’s not hurting the team and he’s shown the ability to learn. What would help him is some consistancy with the coaching (specifically offensive coordinator) The guy they have calling plays right now isn’t helping him. (I really miss Norv.)

As far as the rest of the team needs go, I’d like to see them get a REAL playmaker at WR. I thought perhaps DJAX would be that but now I see why Seattle was so willing to part with him. (Btw, Randy Moss and DJAX cost the same amount in a trade….makes you sick doesn’t it?)

However in terms of the draft I do not want to see them draft another WR in the first round. The last two they drafted early didn’t really work out…yet anyway.

So that leaves us with the Dline. Yes I do believe this is a huge need but one that could be addressed with an early pick in the draft. I know Chris Long DE from Virginia is great and who wouldn’t love to have Glenn Dorsey from LSU! I’m not hoping for an early draft pick (for obvious reasons) but we sure did get a stud in Willis last year and would absolutely love another anchor on the Dline since Bryant Young could be playing his final games.

Other than some injuries and lack of consistancy with the offense (again I place a majority of the blame on the coaching) This team should be close. The D is young and should get better as time goes on and Alex Smith isn’t Joe Montana but he doesn’t have to be. Gore is the key on offense and Vernon Davis needs to live up to at least a part of the hype and they’ll be fine with just a few minor tweaks.
