49er and knowledgable fans only-Assess Coach Nolan’s progress as a coach? Being reasonable, How much time

Seabiscuit asked:

until we should expect a winner? He has had bad breaks like losing his coordinators every year and lots of injuries but this is the way the NFL works, so how long do we give him a chance? I’m not an expert, but sometimes I just can not stand to watch our 49ers, they just look horrible and worst they look boring?
Ultimately this is his program, his draft picks, his coaches, his system, so he has to get the blame eventually? I kow he talks a good game but when do we blame him?

First of all, I think he’s doing fine. As a fan, I actually LOVE Nolan as a coach. He’s completely turned that team from laughable (remember just two years ago?!?!) To a respected franchise. Yes they have issues. But just look at the record the last 4 years. It’s been better and better each year. Obviously this is his most talented team he’s had, and he gets a large part of that credit. But lets face it, inconsistancy in the offensive coordinator and some key injuries have plagued this team.

I won’t place the blame on him yet. The expectations were high for a change and that’s something he needs to deal with. the team is more talented but it’s not deep enough to deal with key injuries. Let’s give it a little more time to see how this plays out this year. If they get a respectable run going (its only week 8!) Which I actually think will happen, then we can decide what sort of blame we thrust upon him.

Dilfer is terrible, the oline hasn’t been great and the play calling is horrific! I would get a new Offensive coordinator before I throw out Nolan. This team reminds me too much of the Ravens at times. Even Patrick Willis reminds me of Ray Lewis (w/o the mouth). And if they can put together a consistant offense around Gore I do think we’ll have a winning franchise again.

My advice to you, just be a little more patient. They are 2-1 in the division and has bad as they have looked they aren’t out of the playoff picture by an means and if they make it under Nolan this year he’ll have a great future.

    Nolans Coaching Record:
    2004: 2-14 (pre-Nolan)
    2005: 4-12
    2006: 7-9
2007: 2-4 (still has oppt. to improve)
